Mwendi Wega AA - Kenya
"Mwendi Wega" are Swahili words meaning "each other"
We first visited Mwendi Wega in 2016, when Stamp Act Coffee was just a twinkle in our eye. Coffee was incredible, which is no doubt do to the efforts of their experienced mill manager, James Mumane, and their tight- knit membership group. This fresh crop continues to shine every season and is hands down one of our favorite coffees over the last five years. Speaking of which, this is the 5th year we've brought in Mwendi Wega!
Mwendi Wega AA is a stunning coffee with a distinct black currant (blackberry) flavor, rich heavy body and pleasant acidity. Perfect for a long pulled espresso or filter brew.
In the hopes of creating more transparency for their community, a group of 42 farmers outside the city of Kerugoya in the region of Kiringyaga decided to pull their collective resources together and build a washing station with hope to better support each other. When we first visited Mwendi Wega, James Mumane walked us through their meticulously clean and beautiful, baby blue washing mill, telling us the story of their name, Mwendi Wega. James mentioned the name came from the farmers group smiling with "each other" as they built the mill. To James, Mwendi Wega means, people who like to smile with each other :-)
